Hiking
& Walking
in and around the Pirin mountains
is both breathtaking and exhilarating.
Whether a gentle stroll along the foot
hills taking in the flora and fauna of the area or,
a 10 hour hike that takes you over the 4 highest peaks (2000 metres
+) and the area called Koncheto, which is a narrow ridge between
2 peaks, these are just 2 extremes
of walking/ hiking available in the area, but, there are so many
options in between these that to list them would be a mammoth
if not impossible task.

If the high mountain walking
isn't for you, there is an abundance of walking along the base of
the foothills. Here you will find reservoirs and plains where you
can, if you wish, sit and take in the sheer beauty of the area.
Venturing just into the forests
you may, if your lucky, even find some small hidden chapels that
were built and used in the times not so long ago when the practice
of religion was forbidden, or maybe come across an archeological
dig.

For the uninitiated mountain walker,
I would like to dispel one myth.
Mountain walking is NOT all about walking along precipices
with sheer 500m drops!
For the most part, tracks are along gentle mountain valleys
and plains. That's not to say there aren't any walks which
take you along narrow paths with long drops, but, as a beginner
you are very unlikely to be taken anywhere near these!

Walking in the mountains needn't
be just for the Ultra fit. There are walks starting from a leisurely
half hour, which taking in the first small lake, you can watch the
mountain trout in the crystal clear waters. Or, just another hour
further on from this one, the second lake (known as the fish lake)
with its waterfall high up to one side of it, is accessible with
very little extra effort than needed to reach the first lake.
On the other extreme, just
one example is a 2 day hike over the mountains passing some of the
deepest and biggest lakes in the mountains and staying en-route
in one of the mountain chalets where you can find a good meal and
the following day, a hearty breakfast before heading off to your
destination in the wine region of Melnik.
