Literally, just across the
valley, and into the Rila mountains, you can trek through lush Pine
forests, and along trails that take you high into the mountains,
and into clearings that give you great views back across the valley
to the Pirin mountain range.
For the more adventurous there
are 2 or 3 day treks available. One of which is following old cart
tracks over the mountains to the famous Rila Monastery.

With hundreds upon hundreds
of old cart tracks, horse riding in the region is limitless.

If you are looking for the
more rustic experience, you can head down the mountain to a village
in the Kresna gorge. Here you can ride the 'Old fashion' Bulgarian
way on wooden saddles and ropes for stirrups (no hats supplied).
(The first time I tried this I was wondering what I had got myself
into! But, believe it or not, it was quite comfy and very enjoyable).
Some of the treks available
will take you into the foothills behind the Pirin mountains, where
you can wind your way along tracks lined with Fig trees and through
valleys of old Turkish villages now layed waste to the ravages of
time.
